CANTIGNY CATAPULT CONTEST LAUNCHES OCTOBER 25
Teams invited to build and demonstrate medieval war machines at 4th annual competition; Spectators welcome!
Wheaton, Ill., October 9, 2014 —The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park will host the fourth Cantigny Catapult Contest on Saturday, October 25, at 10 am.
Teams of up to four people are challenged to build a catapult designed to launch a baseball. They will compete in three categories: Distance, Accuracy and Shot Group. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams in each category. Top three finishers will receive medals.
For each category of competition, each team is allowed five minutes to complete three launches. The longest launch wins the Distance contest, with official distance measured by where the ball first touches down. For Shot Group, the team whose three baseballs come to rest closest together wins. A target is used to determine the Accuracy champion. The team hitting the target the most times wins; if no team hits the target then the closest shot wins.
Complete contest rules and the required team registration form are posted online at FirstDivisionMuseum.org. The website also features a video blog offering catapult design tips and photos from past competitions.
Spectators are welcome at the Cantigny Catapult Contest, which takes place on the park’s Parade Field. An emcee will announce the results of each launch and provide information about the competing teams.

About the First Division Museum
The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park, part of the nonprofit Robert R. McCormick Foundations, promotes public learning about America’s military heritage and affairs through the history of the Big Red One—the famed 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. It stands in tribute to all who have served our country in the armed forces. The museum’s main exhibit hall transports visitors to the trenches of World War I, the beaches of World War II and the jungles of Vietnam. Outside, tanks are displayed from every era, along with personnel carriers and artillery. The Robert R. McCormick Research Center, open to the public, houses the museum’s library, archival and photo collections. Visit the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park online at FirstDivisionMuseum.org.
