Healing in His Name - An Award-Winning Breakfast and a Compelling Story of Hope
Event Description
Join us at 8:30 AM on Saturday, October 17, at First Presbyterian Church, Wheaton, for an award-winning breakfast and a peek at the challenges facing a private Christian hospital in Israel in providing excellent care to all people, whether Christian, Moslem, Druze, or Jew. All these groups are represented among the staff and patients at Nazareth Hospital. Also learn about the efforts right here in IL to collect and prepare unneeded medical supplies and equipment for shipping to save lives all over the world, how our Abraham's Children organization is helping, and how you can help too.
Nazareth Hospital, the oldest one in the modern state of Israel, was founded by Presbyterians in the 1860's as a four-bed facility in a rented house. Learn from our guest speakers, Dr. Bishara Bisharat, General Director, Nazareth Hospital, Israel, and Ms. Samar Mansour-Samawi, MPA, Director Public Relations, Nazareth Hospital, of some of the challenges of managing a private hospital in a country where most of the health care is controlled directly by the government as well as the mission work they are doing in the West Bank, where regular medical care is practically non-existent.
Also learn about the wonderful work being done by a unique and creative organization, Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach, Springfield, IL, collecting and refurbishing life-saving supplies and used medical equipment donated by doctors, nurses, and staff working in 63 hospitals and 18 clinics throughout IL, WI, IN, and MO. Their thorough inventory and packing process ensures only quality supplies and equipment in perfect working condition are prepared for shipping to hospitals, clinics, and medical missions around the world. Since 2002 they have saved and redistributed 9 million pounds of surplus medical equipment and supplies valued at over $49 million that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Our speaker from this organization is Ms. Georgia D. Winson, M.S., LCPC Director.
Abraham’s Children, a mission of First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton, is now partnering with Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach by finding needy recipients and funding the shipment.
All the proceeds from this breakfast will go to Nazareth Hospital, Nazareth, Israel. We have received a matching grant from an anonymous donor so that every dollar we raise will be matched by another dollar up to $10,000. The equipment in the last container we shipped was valued at $175,000. The hospital can then use the money that otherwise would have been needed to purchase equipment to provide scholarships to incoming nurse trainees.
