We Protestants don't talk much about Mary, but she is one of the central figures in the Christmas story. After all, God chose a poor, modest peasant teenager to bear Jesus. When the Angel Gabriel comes to her he says, "Don't be afraid." But the most surprising thing was that Mary had the courage to say 'yes,' "Here am I, according to your word." Of course Mary was afraid, but she does not lose her voice in fear, but finds it. So might it be that we regular, ordinary people like Mary are also invited to become pregnant with God's possibilities for our own lives and the life of our hurting world. God is at work in us just as God was at work in Mary; and God can be born in our hearts anew this Advent season.
