Oct 10    St. Francis High School Presents Radium Girls
On October 10-12, St. Francis High School theatre students will showcase their talents in the fall performance of Radium Girls, under the direction of Brandon Lewis.

In the mid-1920s, luminous watches were trending, but the women factory workers who were painting the watch dials were poisoned and dying from their exposure to the radium in the paint.  Their employers told them the paint was safe and the girls were encouraged to use their lips to “point” their brushes in order to paint with fine detail.  For fun, some women even painted their faces and nails with the luminous pain.

Based on a true story, Radium Girls tells of a quiet rules follower, Grace Fryer, her realization that their working conditions are unsafe, and her decision to fight for justice. Arthur Roeder, her employer, believes that the radium, recently discovered by Madame Curie to be effective in shrinking tumors, could not also be making his employees sick. While Grace pursues the case, she is challenged not only by Mr. Roeder, but also by her family and friends who fear she will fail and there will be backlash.

Oct 26    Trunk or Treat at Gary United Methodist Church
With autumn in full swing, Wheaton's Gary United Methodist Church will be getting into the spirit of the season with its annual "Trunk or Treat" on Saturday, October 26  from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will offer kids a safe alternative to door-to-door trick or treating. Treats will be served from the trunks of church members' creatively-decorated vehicles. Games and food trucks on site will add to the festivities. Costumes are encouraged.

This year’s Trunk or Treat will take place during Downtown Wheaton Association’s “Boo-Palooza.”  The public is invited to take the short walk to the church parking lot on Hale St, right across from Memorial Park, and have some great fun at this spooktacular event!

About Gary United Methodist Church: Located just north of downtown Wheaton at 224 N Main St, Gary Church is an active, mission-oriented congregation with deep roots in the community going back over 160 years. Known for vitalizing and inspiring worship services, the church incorporates a vibrant music program that offers choral, instrumental and bell ensembles.  Programs are available to help children grow and learn together, and the church’s youth programs are exciting and challenging. Engaging and energetic educational and fellowship activities help adults grow in their faith and generate lasting friendships. The church also operates a pre-school that provides a quality and safe Christian environment for the children of the community.
