Oct 8    Harriet Tubman and the Combahee River Raid
REGISTER HERE for the free zoom online event

Most Americans know Harriet Tubman as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad. However, the many biographies and children’s books about Tubman, as well as the biopic “Harriet” are all virtually silent on her Civil War service when Tubman worked for the US Army Department of the South. Tubman was a commander of men in the Combahee River Raid, which freed 756 slaves and was one of the most successful US expeditions in the Civil War. This lecture will present the first original research about Harriet Tubman in more than 15 years and the first ever original research on Tubman’s Civil War service based on a deep reading of 160+ US Civil War Pension Files primarily from the regiments formed after the Raid. ‘Combee’: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and the Gullah Geechee Transformation tells the untold story of the Combahee River Raid from the perspective of Tubman and the enslaved people she helped to free.

MEET THE AUTHOR: Dr. Edda Fields-Black, Associate Professor, Carnegie Mellon University in the Department of History, has written numerous scholarly studies on the trans-national history of West African rice farmers, including Deep Roots: Rice Farmers in West Africa and the African Diaspora and Rice: Global Networks and New Histories (co-edited with Francesca Bray, Peter Coclanis, and Dagmar Schaeffer), which was awarded the Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2015 From 2012 to 2016, Fields-Black served as a consultant for the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture’s permanent exhibit “Rice Fields of the Lowcountry.”  Fields-Black is also a history consultant for the International African American Museum (scheduled to open in Charleston in 2020) and advised the “From Slavery to Freedom” permanent exhibit at the Senator John Heinz History Center.  Fields-Blacks’ latest book is tentatively titled ‘Combee’: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and the Civil War Transformations among the Gullah Geechee  (Oxford University Press trade list, advanced contract) which reveals Harriet Tubman’s Civil War activities, reconstruct the communities which were freed from enslavement on Lowcountry rice plantations in the June 1863 Combahee River Raid, and show the Civil War transformations among freed Blacks in the Lowcountry whose descendants are known today as the Gullah Geechee.  She is executive producer and librettist of Unburied, Unmourned, Unmarked: Requiem for Rice, the first full symphonic work about enslavement with three-time Emmy Award winning classical music composer, John Wineglass.

By keeping current with changing technologies, Virginia can offer the newest and most affordable options best suited to keep your existing technology functioning at peak performance and find your voice online.  She is also a sought-after speaker and trainer addressing today’s technical, email marketing and social media topics.  Virginia is speaks constantly for Fox Valley SCORE, area chambers, and presents a conference on digital marketing for small business each year in the Chicago Suburbs.

“I love to get small businesses and non-profits to have a light bulb moment on their journey to success.  Each business has a pain point that can be overcome with planning.  Technology is changing daily; I can help sift through the choices both good and bad that will enable your business to complete their journey.  “ Virginia Weiskopf

Weiskopf Consulting began in 1998 to serve the needs of independent business, non-profits and entrepreneurs like you. From the beginning it was clear that there was a need for technical support for these types of businesses.  Businesses owners rely on their computers and networks to run their business more efficiently but do not have the technical skills or the support of an IT dept. to facilitate them.  Small business owners wear many hats and navigating the digital marketing arena to achieve your marketing goals can be daunting.  This areas are where Weiskopf Consulting can fill your need and make you succeed.

Oct 10    OUTspoken Leaders Award Ceremony (in person and online)
We are very excited to announce the first ever OUTspoken Leaders Awards Ceremony! Our original plan was to have a large in-person event, but for the safety of everyone involved in the midst of a global pandemic we have changed the plan slightly. You will be able to join the event either in person or virtually! This awards ceremony idea has been on our minds since the formation of OUTspoken Leaders. Our mission is to serve, empower and amplify the voices of all LGBTQ+ youth, young adults, and future leaders. As we’ve grown as an organization and as a community, we saw LGBTQ+ people coming out of the woodwork who have already been emulating qualities of an OUTspoken Leader. We want to highlight examples of how to be a leader within your community.

To highlight leaders in our community, we will be giving out two different awards. The first award is called the OUTspoken Leader Award. This person is someone who has shown exemplary leadership and perseverance throughout their life. With leadership comes a lot of responsibility and can also be extremely challenging. The recipient of the OUTspoken Leader Award is someone who has shown that overcoming obstacles makes you stronger and can help gain respect from the people around you.

The second award being given is the OUTspoken Business Award. This award will go to a business that has unapologetically supported not only the LGBTQ+ community but any marginalized community here in Wheaton. It takes bravery as a business to take a bold stance on issues that can be polarizing. But the support of businesses to marginalized groups helps create a community of acceptance, support, and love. We want to thank the recipient of the OUTspoken Business Award for fearlessly taking a stand for the better of the community and making Wheaton a safe place for all.

These last few months have been tough. It may seem strange to hold an awards ceremony in the midst of a global pandemic. But as a recent trending hashtag stated, #COVIDCan’tStopGood. Now more than ever people are rising up during these unprecedented times and proving that we can make it through this, and we are going to use our voices to fight for what we believe in.

For this to happen, we need your help! Buying a ticket to the ceremony is the most impactful way you can support us. There will be 30 in-person event tickets being sold and up to 100 virtual tickets being sold at a discounted price! If you cannot buy a ticket, we encourage you to donate. Any donation received between August 1st and October 5th will be featured in our program as a sponsor of the OUTspoken Leader Awards. No donation is too small, every little bit helps us on our journey to making Wheaton a more accepting and affirming community. The last way you can support us is to tell people about us! Some businesses even have programs in place where employees can submit non-profits they are passionate about and companies will either match donations or make a donation on the employee’s behalf. Spread the word – any act of sharing our mission can significantly help us reach our goals and help the LGBTQ+ community we are serving. Tax-deductible donations can be made Here or by contacting us directly.

Thank you so much for your continued love and support. It is hard to believe that last October (right around the tenth), the idea for OUTspoken Leaders was born. That first meeting was crazy, and I remember thinking to myself, “There is no way this is going to happen.” Look how far we have come. I know none of that would be possible without you. So even if you cannot support this time, thank you for everything you have done; it means so much to us!

We haven't opened our doors yet, but we are "open for business." If you would like to drop in, virtually, the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Staff hosts Office Hours every Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. via Zoom.  Drop in for a few minutes or the full hour--we'd love to see you!

Office Hours is a way for you to "drop in" to say hello, ask questions of the staff and get your voice heard. This will be yet another way for members to connect with other members.
