Nov 4    “THE UNKNOWNS” WITH AUTHOR PATRICK K. O’DONNELL
“THE UNKNOWNS” WITH AUTHOR PATRICK K. O’DONNELL
Date with History guest will share stories surrounding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Wheaton, Ill., October 21, 2021The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park continues its acclaimed Date with History series with an online program featuring military historian and bestselling author Patrick K. O’Donnell. He will discuss his 2018 book, “The Unknowns: The Untold Story of America’s Unknown Soldier and WWI’s Most Decorated Heroes Who Brought Him Home.”

The free presentation (via Zoom) is on Thursday, November 4, at 7 pm CST. To receive a link, register in advance at FDMuseum.org.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is sacred ground at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Constructed in 1921 to hold one of the thousands of unidentified American soldiers lost in World War I, it contains unknown soldiers from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Millions visit the memorial every year.

To lay the Unknown Soldier to rest in Arlington, General John Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI, selected eight of America’s most decorated, battle-hardened veterans to serve as Body Bearers. He chose them for their bravery and to tell the larger story of America’s role in World War I.

In his book, O’Donnell shares the remarkable heroics of the Body Bearers more than 100 years ago. Their stories fit into the larger narrative of America’s involvement in the conflict, transporting readers into the midst of dramatic battles during 1917-18 that ultimately decided the Great War.

O’Donnell is the author of 12 critically acclaimed books recounting the epic stories of America’s wars, from the Revolution to Iraq. A Fellow at Mount Vernon, he is the recipient of numerous national book awards and an expert on elite and special operations units and irregular warfare.

The First Division Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 am to 5 pm (4 pm-close in November and December). Admission is free with paid parking. Visit FDMuseum.org for additional details.

About the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park
The First Division Museum, part of the Robert R. McCormick Foundations, promotes public learning about America’s military heritage and affairs through the history of the “Big Red One”—the famed 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. The museum’s main exhibit hall, First in War, transports visitors to the trenches of World War I, the beaches of World War II and the jungles of Vietnam. A second exhibit hall, Duty First, explores the 1ID’s history in more recent times. The Robert R. McCormick Research Center, open to the public, houses the museum’s library, archival and photo collections. Outside, tanks from every era are interpreted, along with artillery pieces and a personnel carrier. Solemn memorial markers and commemorative statuary invite quiet reflection.

Nov 19    Poinsettia Display and Mistletoe Market

HOLIDAY POINSETTIA DISPLAY AT CANTIGNY GREENHOUSE

“Shades of Crimson” includes plant sales and self-guided tours; Shop the Mistletoe Market inside the Visitors Center, too!

Wheaton, Ill., November 4, 2021The Cantigny horticulture department will host its annual Shades of Crimson Poinsettia Display on Friday, November 19. Hours are 11 am to 5 pm for this popular holiday event at the park’s greenhouse. Admission is free.

Guest parking ($5) is in the main lot, outside the Cantigny Visitors Center. From there, visitors can walk to the greenhouse or ride a festive trolley.
Guests will see 16 varieties of poinsettias in full bloom and about 3,000 plants in all. Tours are self-guided and photography is welcome. Horticulture staff members will be on hand to discuss the plants and answer questions. Poinsettias in five sizes will be specially priced for sale.

Cantigny’s poinsettias arrive as three-inch-long cuttings, then are carefully nurtured and groomed for about six months. Water, fertilizer, light and temperature are each regulated to achieve the spectacular results that visitors will see at the greenhouse.

Nearly half of the poinsettias go to the Wheaton A.M. Rotary Club which uses them to raise money for its community projects. Another 300 plants will add colorful holiday cheer to buildings throughout the 500-acre Cantigny estate.

After Shades of Crimson, sales to the public will continue at the Cantigny Shop in the Visitors Center and the Cantigny Golf Shop at regular prices. Unsold plants are donated to local nursing homes and care centers.

Also on November 19, visitors are invited to shop for unique holiday gifts from local artists and crafters at Cantigny’s annual Mistletoe Market, in the Visitors Center from 1 to 7 pm. Forty-four vendors are participating.

For everyone’s safety, face coverings are required inside Cantigny buildings and on the trolley. In the greenhouse, the number of people in the poinsettia sales area will be closely monitored, and plants will be pre-packaged to maintain customer flow and social distancing.

Cantigny Park is open daily in November and December from 9 am to sunset. More information is online at Cantigny.org, including a full calendar of seasonal events.
