Diversity Matters: A New Mindset for Today’s Leaders
A three-part virtual series
January 12, February 16 & March 9, 2022

The terms “diversity, equity and inclusion” grab headlines as companies and communities reel from changes in our social structure. From the Black Lives Matter movement to rejection of gender normative roles, organizations and our culture are going through a sea change. This requires a new mindset for today’s leaders.

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Committee of the Wheaton Chamber and Innovation DuPage will host a three-part series designed to provide practical and informative programs to businesspeople in DuPage County. We can all agree on the importance of being as inclusive as possible, but what exactly does really mean? This series will answer questions about the current landscape, how to integrate DEI into your organization and how leaders can work together to be inspiring examples of inclusivity.

Mar 14    Living Room Conversations

Please join Living Room Conversations where small groups discuss a variety of topics to better understand everyone's point of view. This month's topic is Cancel Culture.

With the rise of the 24/7 news cycle and social media, there has been an increase of high-profile cases in which people receive public rebuke or lose professional opportunities due to their past or something they do, say, or post online. Some believe that these instances are appropriate forms of accountability, while others believe they represent an out-of-control “cancel culture” that violates free speech. Let’s discuss! Provided in partnership with the Wheaton Public Library.

This program is provided in the Zoom Meeting format so that you may better engage and interact with the presenter and other participants. Please turn your microphone and/or camera on.

Mar 15    Casting a Historic Vote: Suffrage for Women in Illinois

Join the League of Women Voters of Wheaton, the Wheaton Public Library, and the City of Wheaton Community Relations Commission in honor of Women's History Month as we learn more about women's suffrage in Illinois. Prior to 1920, women were denied the vote in the majority of elections in the United States. The struggle for enfranchisement began with the birth of our nation and was strategized differently in our local, state, and federal elections. Despite what people today believe to be a straightforward goal, the path to women’s suffrage was infused with sexism and racism and triggered a fear of feminism whose roots are still seen today. While wealthy women advocates played a vital role in the suffrage movement, they were not the only ones seeking enfranchisement. From attorney Ellen Martin, the first woman to vote in Illinois, to Ida B. Wells, a woman who did not let racism stop her voice, women’s suffrage has been a battle hard fought by a diverse group of activists in Illinois.

Presented by Jeanne Schultz Angel, Director of Learning Experiences & Historical Resources for Naper Settlement. She is a nonprofit administrator and museum professional with more than 24 years working within cultural institutions.

Mar 17    The Woman All Spies Fear
The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park continues its acclaimed Date with History series with an online program featuring author and historian Amy Butler Greenfield. She will discuss her 2021 book, “The Woman All Spies Fear,” the biography of code-breaking pioneer Elizebeth Smith Friedman.

The free presentation (via Zoom) is on Thursday, March 17, at 6 pm CST. To receive a link, register in advance at FDMuseum.org.

In the summer of 1916, a young woman from Indiana set out to solve a mystery that involved an oddball millionaire, a volume of Shakespeare’s plays, and the secret world of codes and ciphers. Within a year, she had transformed herself into one of America’s top code breakers.

During World War I, Friedman cracked thousands of messages, but that was only the beginning of her brilliant career. In the 1920s and 1930s, she pitted her wits against the mob. When World War II broke out, she hunted Nazi spies.

In this talk, award-winning historian Amy Butler Greenfield, speaking from London, will bring the fascinating story to life, revealing new aspects of Friedman’s remarkable hidden life.

Greenfield writes books for both children and adults, covering art, history, science, and spies. An enthusiastic speaker, she has appeared on radio and television, including PBS’s American Experience. She also has given popular talks at the International Spy Museum, the Los Angeles Public Library, and UK intelligence agency GCHQ.

Born in Philadelphia, Greenfield grew up in the Adirondack Mountains and graduated from Williams College. She now lives with her family in England, near Oxford, where she studied Modern History as a Marshall Scholar.

The First Division Museum is open daily (except Mondays) from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is free with paid parking ($5).

Visit FDMuseum.org for additional details.

About the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park
The First Division Museum, part of the Robert R. McCormick Foundations, promotes public learning about America’s military heritage and affairs through the history of the “Big Red One”—the famed 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. The museum’s main exhibit hall, First in War, transports visitors to the trenches of World War I, the beaches of World War II and the jungles of Vietnam. A second exhibit hall, Duty First, explores the 1ID’s history in more recent times. The Robert R. McCormick Research Center, open to the public, houses the museum’s library, archival and photo collections. Outside, tanks from every era are interpreted, along with artillery pieces and a personnel carrier. Solemn memorial markers and commemorative statuary also command visitors’ attention. The museum’s “Footsteps of the First” travel program, in partnership with Academic Travel Abroad, will explore Normandy and other key sites in Western Europe, October 6-15, 2022. Full details, including the itinerary and registration, are on the museum website.
