Oct 10    Living Room Conversations: Bridging the Gap

Please join Living Room Conversations where small groups discuss a variety of topics to better understand everyone's point of view. We promote conversations about the subject of "Community" through openness to others with varying views. No matter how firm your beliefs, courageously listen with curiosity and respect in order to facilitate communication. This month's topic is Bridging the Gap.

It can be tempting to dismiss the concerns and opinions of the people around us or to make assumptions about their motives. Many have stopped talking about topics that might create discomfort due to disagreement, or even let go of connections with those they disagree with. All this can contribute to increased polarization. As we strive toward greater understanding and achieving mutual goals, let's discuss how we can navigate and overcome political stereotyping. Provided in partnership with the Wheaton Public Library. Please register to join the conversation!

This program is provided in the Zoom Meeting format so that you may better engage and interact with the presenter and other participants. Please turn your microphone and/or camera on.

Oct 13    Civic Awareness Program: Improving Civil Discourse - The Science of Us vs. Them
Free in-person program; all are welcome to attend. Can't join us in person? Register if you plan to attend virtually. In-person attendees do not need to register.

Cantigny Park and the League of Women Voters of Wheaton, Central Kane County, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, and Roselle/Bloomingdale continue their Civic Awareness Series on Thursday, October 13, at 7 p.m. Terry Wu, Ph.D., will present "How to Stop Infighting: The Science of Us vs. Them.

The program is offered in person and online. Registration is not required for those attending in person at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center, and parking is free. Online participants should register at Cantigny.org to receive a Zoom link.

Perhaps now more than ever, our democracy demands that each of us be willing to listen to others with whom we may not agree. Dr. Wu, a captivating speaker and storyteller, applies a neuroscience-based approach to helping us understand the “us vs. them” dynamic. The division, he says, happens automatically without our conscious awareness, creating aggression and hostility. Dr. Wu will share actionable ideas for bridging the “us vs. them” divide—first steps toward improving civil discourse in our communities and reducing anxiety around traditionally divisive issues.

Registration is not required for those attending the September 8 program at the Cantigny Park Visitors Center, and parking is free.

Online participants: please register using the button below. We will send you a Zoom link.

You can submit your questions to ccorrigan@fdmuseum.org or blaimins@gmail.com. During the presentation, virtual participants, please use the Q&A button located on the bottom of the Zoom screen.
