Recycling Extravaganza Yields Impressive Numbers

WHEATON, Ill. – More than 825 cars rolled through Wheaton’s Recycling Extravaganza on April 21, 2012, bringing with them everything from bikes to clothing to propane tanks. Wheaton’s Environmental Improvement Commission reports that the community dropped off an impressive amount of stuff to be recycled or reused. This included:

  • 2 trailers full of scrap metal
  • 31,469 pounds of electronics (and 41,002 pounds collected the previous weekend at Wheaton’s monthly collection – for a total of 72,471 pounds over two consecutive Saturdays)
  • 177 American flags
  • 450 pounds of LP records
  • 79 license plates
  • 63 propane tanks
  • 43 bikes
  • 162 car and truck batteries
  • 7 musical instruments
  • Nearly full 53-foot trailer full of clothing/textiles for Goodwill
  • 58 fire extinguishers

The Environmental Improvement Commission would like to thank all of the volunteers who made the event run smoothly, including many volunteers from Wheaton Warrenville South and Wheaton North high schools.

The next opportunity for you to recycle electronics will be during the City’s monthly collection on May 12. For more information, see the City’s website.
