CENTER FOR HISTORY HOSTS WHEATON CIVIL WAR FAIR
Proceeds benefit education and history in the community
WHEATON, IL – April 27, 2012 – The Center for History will host a Wheaton Civil War Fair to support education and history in the local community on Friday, May 11 at 6:30 pm. The event offers a rare opportunity to experience the efforts of the Sanitary Commission during the Civil War and features special guests from the era, President and Mrs. Lincoln and Mary Bickerdyke.
The Sanitary Commission, founded in 1861, sent women to nurse the wounded and improve poor conditions and nutrition at field hospitals and camps. Lavish fairs were hosted by local branches of the Commission to raise funds through donations and auctions, the first of which was held in Chicago in 1863.
The Wheaton Fair will replicate this fundraising event to support the Center for History’s important work preserving our history and creating quality educational programs. Guests will enjoy dinner, live Civil War-era music by Roger Kotecki, and an auction for authentic Civil War memorabilia and other beautiful items.
The Fair will be held at the Center for History’s location at 315 W. Front Street, 2nd Floor in Wheaton. This beautifully designed space will transport guests back in time with the Civil War exhibit, “War of the Rebellion 1861-65.”
Tickets are $50 per person, and sponsorship opportunities are also available. For tickets and more information, please contact the Center for History at 630-871-6601 or info@wheatonhistory.com.
