Jun 3    "Homage to Frida" VIP Art Reception
The Frida Kahlo: Timeless Exhibition is coming at last. We can't wait until the doors open June 5 at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art at the McAninch Arts Center ("the MAC") on the campus of the College of DuPage, opening us to the world of Frida.

Until then, our Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Arts & Sports Tourism Committee is hosting "Homage to Frida," a collection of artwork here at the Wheaton Chamber featuring local artists. With help from the curators from the Burning Bush Gallery at Gary UMC, we've installed an exhibition that honors Frida in each artist's own way.

The Chamber will be open for "Homage to Frida" on the following evenings:
  • 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 20
  • 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 27
  • 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 3
  • 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 4, in celebration of "Frida Fridays" hosted by the Downtown Wheaton Association

Out of a concern for safety, we are offering two "waves" of opportunities for guests each evening (6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) with a limit of 10 guests per wave. Please register to reserve your time slot. Due to our small space, we will ask our guests to wear masks.

Jun 5    The Healing Voice: Liberation through the Ecstasy of Chant
Join Jill Purce, pioneer voice teacher, family and ancestor constellation therapist and author, for an uplifting exploration of transformative breathing and chanting, mantra, sonic meditations, sacred chants, and healing. Learn and practice the ethereal and meditative technique of Mongolian overtone chanting, a powerful vocal yoga and one of the most effective tools for healing yourself and others. This form of chanting transforms our voices into rainbows of sound and light. Learn vocal purifications and ways to set different parts of the body into resonance, cleanse and tune the chakras and learn sonorous massage.

This process of healing and purification allows us to realize the fullness of our potential as luminous human beings. Working with the voice in this way empowers our lives, balances our mind and body, and frees our voices, bringing physical health, emotional joy, and spiritual ecstasy.

In this experiential workshop, you will:

  • Experience vocal and chakra purifications and ways to set parts of the body into resonance
  • Learn Overtone Chanting
  • Learn sonorous massage
  • Discover how this healing art authenticates the fullness of our luminous potential

 $45

Registration includes on-demand access to a recording of the workshop, which can be viewed for two weeks following the date it was presented.

To ensure you receive your meeting link prior to the live program, please register by June 4.

Jill Purce is a British voice teacher, therapist, and author. In the 1970s, Jill developed a new way of working with the voice, introducing the teaching of group overtone chanting – producing a single note while amplifying the vocal harmonics. She is a former fellow of King's College London, Biophysics Department, and has produced over 30 books as general editor of the Thames and Hudson Art & Imagination series. From 1971 – 1974 she lived and worked in Germany with composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Since the early 1970s Jill has taught diverse forms of contemplative chant internationally. For over 25 years she has been leading Family and Ancestral Constellations combined with chant. Jill is married to biologist and author Rupert Sheldrake, with whom she has two sons, the biologist and author Merlin, and musician Cosmo. She is the author of The Mystic Spiral: Journey of the Soul.

Jun 8    LEADERSHIP: A CONVERSATON WITH THE GENERALS

LEADERSHIP: A CONVERSATON WITH THE GENERALS

Discussion panel will explore what it takes to be an effective leader in all walks of life

Wheaton, Ill., May 25, 2021 – The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park announces an extraordinary guest panel of current and retired U.S. Army generals who will share their thoughts on applying leadership, in their military lives and beyond. All six speakers are current or former Commanding Generals of the 1st Infantry Division, the famed “Big Red One.”

“Leadership: A Conversation with the Generals” is set for Tuesday, June 8, at 7 pm Central. The virtual program, offered via Zoom, is free to attend. Advance registration is required at FDMuseum.org.

The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Colonel (Retired) Krewasky A. Salter, Ph.D., Executive Director, Museums at Cantigny Park, which includes the First Division Museum.
“We’ve assembled a remarkable group of general officers whose experiences during active duty are extremely relevant to all walks of life,” Salter said. “They have agreed to share their insights on leadership as military officers and civilians, and to share their experiences leading some of America’s finest men and women in peacetime and in combat. We are fortunate for this rare opportunity to bring them together.”

Scheduled participants are:

  • Major General Douglas A. Sims II is the current Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division (1ID). He has soldiers deployed around the globe, including in Europe, the Middle East and Korea. Many of his soldiers also recently served in several American cities helping to vaccinate the population against COVID-19.
  • General Vincent K. Brooks served with the 1st Infantry Division twice, first as a company commander and later as Commanding General during the combat deployment to Iraq as U.S. Division-South (Task Force Victory) in 2010. As commander of TF Victory he had several other divisional brigades under his command.
  • Lieutenant General Ronald L. Watts commanded the 1st Infantry Division during the latter years of the Cold War. During his tenure he led 1ID soldiers in the deterrent mission REFORGER (Return of Forces to Germany)—the deployment of peacetime forces from the U.S. to Germany to deter Warsaw Pact aggression.
  • Lieutenant General Thomas G. Rhame commanded the 1st Infantry Division during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. During combat operations he led 1ID soldiers as they conducted the initial attack to penetrate Iraqi defensive positions, a rapid passage of lines for the British forces, a night attack, and in the critical role of liberating Kuwait.
  • Lieutenant General Perry L. Wiggins commanded the 1st Infantry Division from 2008 to 2009 and is qualified to fly several aircraft in the Army’s inventory. During his time in command 1ID soldiers served throughout four provinces in Afghanistan as part of a combined joint task force.
  • Major General David L. Grange commanded the 1st Infantry Division as his last assignment before retiring in 2000. He took command of the 1ID in Bosnia, leading the Division (Task Force Eagle) during a critical period when local mob violence tensions were high as Serbs, Croats and Bosniacs refused to live together peacefully.
More detailed biographical information for each general is posted HERE

The First Division Museum is currently open Wednesday through Sunday. Entry is included with Cantigny’s parking fee, but advance ticketing is required to enforce temporary visitation limits. Masks are required. More information is online FDMuseum.org.
